Potchefstroom – A woman and a man will appear in separate courts on Monday on charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), North West police said on Sunday.

Potchefstroom police on Saturday arrested a 46-year-old woman for allegedly causing grievous body harm to her 44-year-old husband at about 11am on Saturday in Peter Mokaba Street, Potchefstroom, Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said.

“According to information received, the husband was home with his wife when she was preparing breakfast. It is alleged that an argument ensued between the couple and the wife allegedly grabbed a pot on the stove containing hot oil and poured [it on her] husband’s stomach and hands.

“Allegedly the husband sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for medical treatment. The wife was arrested and is expected to appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court [on Monday] on charges of assault GBH,” Moleko said.

In another case, Hebron police arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly causing grievous body harm to a 35-year-old police officer in Itsoseng at about 8.10pm on Saturday.

Police officers were carrying out crime prevention duties when “they spotted a suspect allegedly gambling and drinking in public”. When the officers were about to arrest him, he suddenly hit a woman officer in the face with a beer bottle.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries to her eye. The man was expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Monday, also on charges of assault GBH.

The investigations into both case were continuing, Moleko said.
