No home is complete without a nice garden, so it is hard to understand the fuss about the additional R16 million spent on landscaping President Jacob Zuma’s presidential compound, Nkandla.

This is but a fraction of the approximately R250m that the homesteads, rondavels, underground bunker, fire-pool, recreation centre, marital tunnels, helicopter pad, guard posts, cattle kraal and other essentials all cost.

It's wonderful that within the next 10 years we will have a new, super suburban train system – with luck it may even be as clean, efficient and safe as the old one was in the distant past.

This thought of mine was voiced by none other than Marc Granger, chief executive of Gibela, the company that in association with the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) will overhaul and upgrade the passenger service at a cost of R170 billion.

Ashes, and what people do with them after their original owners have no further use for them, are a perennial source of interest. Amusement, too, after grief and sorrow have worn off.

How many relatives have ended up on someone’s mantleshelf, in a box or urn, like my Aunt Dot’s before my brother and I had her decently interred in the graveyard behind her church.

 YOU had to know your acronyms to understand what mayor Patricia de Lille was talking about when she addressed the Cape Town City Council yesterday.

For instance, a number of consumers had already connected rooftop PV generation to the city’s electricity grid. That’s “photovoltaic” for the unitiated. And SSEG tariffs would make it legally possible to feed electrical power back into the municipal grid. What, you haven’t heard of “small-scale embedded generation”?

Some 13 500 applicants failed their driving test in Cape Town during a three-month period this year, some of them having tried five times.

I’m not surprised. Mayoral committee member JP Smith says the traffic officers who test them have to “act like robots”. If I had to be tested by a robot I’d also fail, and I’ve been driving for 57 years.
